“We’ll move her here.”

About the reaction I expected from Jonas.

I just finished filling him in on what has been going on, and I figured he’d be a fan of locking Lucy down. He doesn’t know her the way I do though, and too heavy a hand will have her running for the hills.

“That would actually complicate things from a logistics perspective. The animals at the rescue are gonna need looking after. She’s got two baby goats who still get formula three times a day. Simpler for her to stay right there.”

He peers at me from under the rim of his hat, a skeptical look on his face.

“What you’re really saying is you don’t wanna piss her off,” he assesses.

I briefly consider his comment before speaking.

“Yes, that’s what I’m saying.”

His laugh booms as he rounds his desk to clap me on the shoulder.

“Welcome to the club, Rivera.”

“I’m interrupting something.”

Jonas and I both turn to the door to see Ludwig walk into the office.

“Nah,” Jonas is first to respond. “Rivera here is quickly learning what goes into keeping a woman happy.”

I grin and shake my head, incurring the tease before I fire one right back at him.

“Luckily, I’m not taking lessons from you or I’d be in hot water now, wouldn’t I?”

Jonas flips back his hat and runs his hand over his face.

“Don’t remind me.” Then he looks up at Ludwig. “What about you? You married? Involved?”

“Married. It’s work,” the trainer directs at me, showing off his capped teeth. “That doesn’t change.”

Great, now I have this slick operator giving me relationship advice. I need to get out of here.

“Good to know.” I turn to Jonas. “Anyway, I’d best get working on those training exercises for Dan.”

“Yeah, we should probably get going shortly as well,” Ludwig suggests as he steps aside to let me through. “I’ve got Marco waiting outside.”

“No problem. Give me five minutes to grab my gear,” I hear Jonas say behind me. Then he addresses me, “And, Bo, we’ll be in touch, yeah?”

I give him a thumbs-up before stepping outside.

I notice Alex is in the corral working with a skittish paint pony. Thomas is leaning against the fence, watching, with someone I assume is Ludwig’s guy. I’ve never seen him.

Thomas turns when he hears me approach.

“Bo, how’s your mother?”

“Saw her Sunday. She’s good.”

The guy beside him turns too, giving me a once-over. I take stock of him as well while I listen to Thomas with half an ear. The guy wears a ball cap instead of a proper hat, but at least it’s not one of those sissy Tilley hats like Ludwig wears.

“Was thinking of giving her a call, actually. There’s a Thanksgiving social at the Legion in town, weekend after next, I thought she might enjoy.”

When what he says registers, I accidentally inhale spit and start coughing to clear my airway. Thomas starts pounding on my back.

Jesus. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

“Fuck, Thomas. You asking my permission or something?” I grumble when I can finally get some air in my lungs.
